DAVID GUSSAK
FSU Holocaust Institute for educators offers free lecture series to the public

The Holocaust, a watershed event for the world, has become an invaluable tool in the examination of basic moral issues. The Florida State University Holocaust Institute for Educators will present two free lectures open to the public that will offer different perspectives of that time.

On Sunday, June 19, David Gussak, an associate professor and clinical coordinator for the FSU Art Therapy Program, will speak about artwork that was found in the ghettos and concentration camps. He will explore how these works reflect their creators, why the survival of this artwork is so important and what messages we can take away from these artifacts for today's world.

On Thursday, June 23, survivor Mary Wygodski will recount her personal experiences during the Holocaust, including how she was placed in the Vilna ghetto as a young girl, then separated from her family and sent to several camps to endure forced labor. When finally liberated, she learned she was the only member of her immediate family to survive. Both lectures will be held at the FSU Turnbull Conference Center at 8 p.m. in the Everglades Auditorium.

Scholars, historians and laypeople alike examine the Holocaust in order to gain some understanding about an event that had an impact on millions of people from varying economic, religious and social groups and whose consequences are all too relevant today. Now in its 12th year, the Florida State University Holocaust Institute for Educators has been seeking methods to provide educators with the requisite knowledge and abilities to teach their students and fellow professionals about the Holocaust. As part of the intensive, two-week educational program this knowledge is shared with the community through free lectures.
